Agents of Mayhem analysis. Desmere Volition style

Agents of Mayhem
Written by Kamran Haider

Continuous action, sense of humor and unleashed madness once again become the basic ingredients of the new production of the Volition Games studio, responsible for the Saints Row saga that brings us their new work. Agents of Mayhem analysis.

Unquestionably, the spirit of the Saints Row franchise lives within Agents of Mayhem, the new madness of Volition. But not only that. It also has some Crackdown, especially in relation to the navigability of the environment that hosts the adventure, saga with which it also has other similarities. These are two of the most important conclusions I have been able to draw after having been immersed for many hours in this new sandbox madness that will surely cause a sensation among the followers of this type of proposal. A hilarious adventure that, despite not being perfect, knows how to entertain us for a long time.

Everything that happens throughout the game takes place in a futuristic version (even more so) of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. A city that has been represented in a remarkable way and that extends over many square kilometers, being able to freely explore and how the canons of the genre send each recess of its streets and its large buildings and skyscrapers, since the playability of Agents of Mayhem invites us to explore the stage both at ground level and from the heights.

But what is our most important objective? Ending Doctor Babylon and the LEGION organization, which has taken the city with plans that are not too rosy for the entire planet, as they plan to seize it. But to stop their intentions there are the main protagonists of this story, the agents MAYHEM, a dozen of them that appear gradually as the story unfolds and we overcome their corresponding particular missions, characters that enjoy special abilities … that we can also go expanding and strengthening as we progress as I will explain later. A plot that extends over 15 hours minimum (many more if we dedicate ourselves to explore and overcome the innumerable missions and secondary tasks) that we have a lot of fun little we like this type of sandbox adventure.

Fun, humor and lots of action

As a good sandbox, in Agents of Mayhem, we can explore with total freedom the different areas that make up the city of Seoul … although to move forward in history it is necessary to overcome different main missions that are entrusted to us. And there are more than fifty of these primary objectives so that you get an idea of the “scale” that this adventure presents. In addition, in most cases, it is possible to choose which one we want to perform at each moment since many are clearly active in the mapping and can be fulfilled when we want to.

In general, the development of each of these commissions has seemed quite varied and entertaining, although as often happens in these works, some are more fun and exciting than others. The most striking are the objectives that allow us to unlock the different agents, missions that are also preceded by fun animation sequences. But beyond these main missions, it is also possible to carry out countless task show to take control of bases (Far Cry style), destroy concrete cars, participate in city races aboard several different cars, collect special crystals (exactly 350 of them) that are scattered throughout the city … By power, We even have the possibility to repeat missions already accomplished and even pass virtual confrontation tests that provide us with additional rewards. There is much to do in this adventure, I assure you.humor and lots of action

The gameplay is made up of several elements, although the fundamental one is the action. The shootings and clashes are continuous, it being necessary to fight against the forces of Doctor Babylon using all the weapons at our disposal, including those manufactured by our ally Gremlin, which is as fun and unique as blunt. These sequences of action are quite gratifying and well resolved, although they do not contribute anything new to what we have experienced in many previous titles.

The verticality of the city remarkably benefits the gameplay

However, to this playable base are added other conditions and ingredients more typical of its genre such as the interaction with different secondary characters, the fact of being able to drive a good bouquet of vehicles to tour the city at full speed, a lot of exploration (there are a lot of loots to discover), terminal hacking … For diversity it will not be, I assure you.

This game mechanic that I just mentioned differs somewhat from that enjoyed in most games of its style by a very specific feature. And instead of moving forward with a solo character, in Agents of Mayhem we must form a team composed of three members. In the beginning, it is only possible to play with Hollywood, Fortune, and Hardtack, but as we move forward and we meet new characters (such as Oni, my favorite, as well as the stylish Joule, rapper Kingpin, etc.) the payroll grows until it reaches the dozen. And as I have mentioned before each of these additional characters has its own special phase that unlocks them, which is a very suggestive incentive in itself.

All these types have their own characteristics and main attributes as well as several intrinsic skills, offering a wide selection that we have at our disposal. There are those who dominate the ice in a Sub-Zero plan like Yeti, others are much more agile and fast like Fortune, lethal over long distances like Rama … It’s yours to choose our team based on the mission you need to take care of, which gives this adventure a depth that few games of its style enjoy. In addition, the customization of all of them is tremendous, given that in addition to being able to obtain new costumes and appearances for all of them, it is also possible to provide them with new devices, perks, and passive skills as we gain experience, overcome levels and invest money in the development of new weapons.perks

Once we are in full action and except in the special phases dedicated to each protagonist in which we advance alone, we can change from one agent to another at any time using the digital crosshead, which allows us to adapt our style of play in an instant to overcome the situation posed by the title at all times. And there are many! Hacking terminals, ending with final bosses, reaching as soon as possible a certain place on the map piloting a luxury sports car, entering an underground lair of LEGION, facing duels against rivals that do not stop reaching us … Varied playability to which we can easily adapt changing protagonist when we consider it appropriate, something that I personally liked very much.

In fact, and precisely because of this feature, I have been somewhat shocked that the adventure does not include cooperative mode of any kind. I think that this modality would have adapted perfectly to the development proposed by this sandbox, but unfortunately, its managers have not had to see it as clear and have not incorporated this option.

What Volition Games has tried by all its means is to provide its products with the greatest depth and possibilities possible, and that is why we are facing an adventure that enjoys a tremendous amount of content. To start, whenever we want it is possible to take a tour of our headquarters, ARK, where it is possible to carry out a good amount of tasks and tune-up our characters.

It will not go down in history because of its colorfulness or originality, but it manages to entertain us, and much

In these facilities it is possible to accept missions and commissions, dialogue with other characters (in English with Spanish subtitles ) so that they offer us intelligence information about some aspect in specifically, investing in R&D to obtain new weapons and technology of several different classes, empower our agents … A perfect place to relax a bit between one mission and the next. In addition, here we can also follow the evolution of the so-called Global Conflict, a complementary function that allows us to send some of our agents all over the world for a certain time (about 5 or 10 minutes of the real average game) so that they go inspecting what happens with LEGION beyond Seoul. During each of these missions, the agent sent is blocked and we cannot use it to deliver the main missions, but in return, we can obtain valuable rewards such as new contracts, money or more resources for the agency. One more way to contribute content to the adventure.

It is also worth exploring the city quietly and discover some of its intricacies and the different areas that make it up, with a good number of places of interest. The navigation has seemed very accessible to me thanks to the triple jump enjoyed by the protagonists, which allows us to climb buildings with great ease, remembering what was established long ago with the acclaimed Crackdown. The verticality of the city of Seoul is very worthwhile and the gameplay benefits from it in several different ways, so I think it has been well exploited by Volition Games … as well as the sense of humor marks of the house that shows all the adventure.

What would a game of this studio be without its particular humor? Agents of Mayhem is no exception and both during many of the conversations that we can witness and in a large number of situations that we experience throughout the adventure we are entertained with jokes and comic contexts of all kinds. One more way to create a fun and attractive environment for anyone who enters this video game that, although it will not go down in history because of its transcendence, colorfulness or originality in its approach, it does manage to entertain us, and much more. And that remains the most important thing in any game that goes on the market, which sometimes we forget.

For all these Agents of Mayhem is a kind of spiritual successor to Saints Row, offering a similar approach that has an aged flavor, that is, it looks like a “sandbox old school” if you allow me to use this qualifier within this genre. But far from looking outdated in the worst sense, at least I found it very refreshing and, again, it is one of those games that you want to play despite its flaws, which also has them. Certain occasional bugs, a reiteration of objectives, the design of LEGION’s lairs are repeated more than the account or certain inconsistencies in the AI of the rivals affect the gameplay negatively, but never become so important as to blur it noticeably. Sometimes they bother, but little else.

Mayhem’s heart

Turning to comment on its technical section, the game looks good, but not at all it is the highlight that this production offers us. Following what is embodied in the entire Saints Row series, the most laudable thing in my opinion that this technical face gives us has to do with the designs of the main characters and enemies, quite successful in general, pulling cartoon aesthetics and animations to fulfill the case file.

The size of the city of Seoul that hosts the adventure is also worthy of praise, a city that consists of several distinct areas (the center, the central square, the storage area, etc.) that hide many collectibles that we can collect. Another quality that Agents of Mayhem presents is its stable animation frame rate, at least in the version for PS4 Pro which I have been able to enjoy, an aspect that I was pleased to check given that in the previous versions I had tried the title This rate was somewhat inconsistent. In fact, the frames only suffer on very specific occasions, such as when we are onboard a vehicle and we tread thoroughly in some very overloaded areas of the scenarios.

Of course, I must also point out that the quality of some textures that can be seen in the scenarios is improved, popping is quite evident when we drive vehicles, some areas are somewhat empty and the overall polygon load that manages the graphic engine is more very low. But as a whole the virtues clearly outweigh the defects, that is the important thing, and in addition, none of the technical problems that Agents of Mayhem harbor is serious at all, or that is what I consider.

Special mention deserves the excellent video scenes that are seen from time to time, which come to be like short animated chapters that I personally liked. In addition, they contribute their grain of sand at the time of introducing ourselves to the different protagonists and enemies, unraveling the plot, etc.

Finally and in relation to the sound finish, it is clearly above what is established in the previous section. This is especially due to the magnificent dubbing in English (with Spanish subtitles as I have mentioned before) with which the Volition video game has been graced, although the resounding sound effects are not far behind. The soundtrack does not clash either, offering us quite varied themes that adapt well to the action.

Conclusion:

The creators of Saints Row have created another saga that holds several important similarities with its revered franchise but that has its own personality. Agents of Mayhem is a very fun game above all and that offers us many possibilities. The fact of being able to change the protagonist and to be able to choose between a dozen of them is one of its main virtues, to which a great sense of humor is added. It is not perfect, technically it is not a wonder and some characteristic is missing such as the integration of a cooperative game mode (it cries out for its idiosyncrasy), but what is no doubt is that it is an adventure to have in account and that most likely it will become a new series that will be with us for many years. Fun above any other aspect.

  • Great cast of controllable protagonists
  • Many game possibilities, it is a very dense adventure
  • Great sense of humor, very Saints Row
  • Being able to change characters is a great idea …
  • … but we miss a cooperative way
  • Some missions are repetitive and not very original
  • The overall polygonal load is rather low
