It was obvious that the disappearance of western samurai William was not going to take long. It is time to return to Japan, specifically to the Oshu region, to deal with a new evil coming from the Yokai that is ravaging the area and whose clan chief, Masamune Date, seems to be the main participant.
After my first tour of The Dragon of the North, the DLCs of Dark Souls II came to mind. I do not know very well why, perhaps for their separate missions, for the occasional snowy scenario, for certain super final bosses … And others that seemed almost made to play in the company, for how difficult it is to face them the first time.
Of course, this happens to me for having faced El Dragon del Norte with less level than recommended. As much as Nioh finished with all the secondary missions for his analysis, you know that the advisable level in each new region and mission was increasing by leaps and bounds, and it was difficult to keep up. And although I was able to solve it without much problem based on good equipment and skill, I haven’t had so much time to continue raising levels since the launch of the original game.
I think this Team Ninja DLC takes into account that the regular Nioh player has done it. He has continued to increase his post-game statistics, enjoying the sunset missions or even starting a new game instantly. Getting to the recommended level 150 will not be so much trouble then. With many fewer levels, it is also possible to face this DLC, although virtually any touch is lethal, the elixirs evaporate and, although we have managed to finish it based on pure stubbornness (I am) I think it would have been healthier to have done it with certain error range.
Because the new enemies and bosses do not forgive. There are not many, and that is one of the greatest penalties of The Dragon of the North, but they hit hard and are fast. One of them, as if from a Resident Evil, is an ordinary samurai whose head becomes a kind of snake capable of throwing fire, poison and attacking at short and long-distance. In fact, almost all of this new DLC seems to be made so you can’t feel comfortable near or far from the enemy. The Reapers, huge demons with big machetes, are fast, unpredictable and capable of mowing your life with a single grip.
The return home
The bosses live up to the experience, able to test your nerves and your frustration. Date Shigazane, for example, is a samurai fused to a centipede whose pattern of attack is varied, difficult to detect and hard to answer correctly, which demoralizes at first because of his amount of life and how easy it is to end yours. Possibly he was the head of a Soulslike that has finished faster with us as soon as he starts the fight. There are also “bosses” in side missions, like three human enemies (hence the memory of the Thief, Varg, and Cerah of The Crown of the Sunken King) where you have to deal with an unfair, but exciting battle.
In short, The Dragon of the North has all that post-game content you wanted to give free rein in new scenarios and enemies to your weapons and divine armor while continuing your search for completeness without having to repeat the scenario. And if you had already done all or almost everything, an interesting addition is added such as the Odachi, the gigantic sword of almost two meters in length with its own animations, combat style, and skill tree. It is not the only addition, new Omnyo magic and especially new guardian spirits that you can level up and combine to take two at the same time join the set in this DLC.

Some more of the main content is missing, since although there are secondary missions, some are of the old known “hordes” in the underworld, although others are more elaborate. But the new region feels somewhat empty because there are two main missions and nothing more than two, and it is just when you start to feel like NiOh again that everything is over and you just have to take another spin or wait for next downloadable content.
Maybe that’s why Team Ninja has decided to release this DLC with an important patch, 1.08, loaded with so many new features that in many occasions it may seem that they are included in The Dragon of the North. But it is not so: PvP arenas of 1vs1 and 2vs2 were promised and are finally available to all players, as well as the female character appearances. The maximum level has also been set to 400 and it is more difficult to reach it, so many players who exceeded this number have seen their level reduced to establish the new calculation. Finally, a new difficulty mode has been added that will help to continue to increase experience.
The Dragon of the North may become somewhat short, but if something has been demonstrated during these months since the launch of the base title, it is that the NiOh player looks more like Diablo than Souls. He likes to raise levels, face the challenge in more difficult challenges and maximize weapons and skills in previous missions. For them, their level has been reduced is not a disappointment, but a reason to continue playing. And this DLC has enough incentives to continue one more season until the Season Pass is complete.
