Candle analysis. Candle watercolors reach consoles

Written by Kamran Haider

To give life to Candle was quite an odyssey for the young Spanish team of Teku Studios but the wait was well worth it. Available on PC for some years, at last, the players of PS4, Xbox One and Switch can enjoy this beautiful adventure of puzzles inspired by classics like Another World. In our analysis of Candle, we delve into the great achievements of this video game.

I said it in his day when, after years of waiting, finally we could enjoy on PC of the great opera prima of Teku Studios. “There is something heroic in the birth of Candle, something even romantic that, somehow, gets that anyone who tries this beautiful puzzle adventure falls surrendered to its charms.” Against all odds this young Spanish studio fought to create a videogame inspired by great classics like Another World or Flashback, pampering down to the smallest detail, taking maximum care of the aesthetics of his work, until turning it into one of the most beautiful and personal games of the last times. His artistic sectionit is pure love, for what it shows, which is wonderful, as for the insane work that has meant for its creators to capture on screen all that magic painting by hand, for years, a fascinating tribal world in which it is a pleasure to get lost. There is a passion, an infinite affection in each one of the brush strokes that have given life to him; but there is also soul, heart, on a deeper level that goes beyond the merely aesthetic. That is why it is impossible not to be happy when, once again after much waiting, Candle opens in consoles.

“The art of Candle is not present just to make the game something beautiful,” the authors of the game told us in an interview; “it is intimately linked in the playable with the adventure”. And it’s true. Many of the puzzles that the game poses require special attention to the scenarios. You have to look at them, beautiful, they are, but also because they hide the clues necessary to solve the riddles that this title creates with such ingenuity. Sometimes it is subtle and difficult to find the answer to some of their puzzles; It is said by someone who has jumped into the void, desperately trying to solve some of them. But in general, the pure logicreigns in the lavish wild world that portrays this challenging adventure in which the minimum error is paid with death. It’s not that much pain either.

An artistic prodigy

As hard as the trip is sometimes, and this is a difficult game, Candle manages to never miss a smile on your face. As I said it is inspired by great classics of the genre and from there it does not stop growing and surprising every step you take. The first puzzles are simple: move a box here, jump over there, activate that switch … until the thing gets complicated, and besides all that, you must avoid enemies using stealth, collect and combine objects, avoid traps and obstacles as if of a platform; Of course solve more brainy puzzles, some very original and, above all, explore; investigate thoroughly some scenarios that here are the real protagonists of the action.

It’s what I value most about Candle; is what makes this an above-average adventure. The puzzles, the challenges he poses, do not feel alien to that wonderful world painted with watercolors that we explore so passionately. They are part of it; they are one more piece within a complex network of levels that are related to each other, and with the story itself, in such a subtle, brilliant way that it is hard not to applaud the work of Teku Studios.

Someone asks you for something and that something is in a distant place to access, before you must avoid other tests that require hidden objects, that is, in another scenario. It sounds messy, yes, but Candle poses her action so intelligently that our advances occur naturally, fluidly, without frustration invading us at any time. Are you stuck in any test? Nothing happens, because there are always several tasks to be undertaken before solving that great final puzzle that closes each of the three acts that shape the game.memorable moments

There is passion, an infinite affection in each one of the brush strokes that have given him life.

The adventure is full of memorable moments, of situations with which it is difficult not to get excited. Escaping in extremis from an enemy, surviving a death trap, solving enigmas that seemed impossible … one of the great virtues of Candle is that he always knows how to surprise you. Such is the variety of puzzles that he presents, such is his ingenuity and originality that he will rarely repeat the same actions. In this sense, I love the use that has been given to the great and unique special ability of young Teku, the protagonist of the adventure. He carries in his hand a candle with which he can set fire to certain elements of the stage, but of course, the light attracts the attention of the enemies and, if there is water in between, it can be extinguished. Responding to these problems is sometimes so funny that in the end you’re left wanting more.

You want more Teku, more puzzles, more scenarios to explore. And that we do not talk about an adventure precisely lack of content. Complete the trip, go in search of the shaman of our village, it can take us between ten and twelve hours depending on how clever we are. And often ride! Beyond the preciousness of the graphics and the excellent soundtrack that accompanies us, Candle is also surprised by the quality of his argument. A priori, the story he tells does not seem like a big deal; the typical story with a brave hero in between. And yet everything improves with the passing of the hour’s thanks to a great plot background that has an irresistible dark touch, devastating, that feels great.

I have missed a final challenge more epic, more exciting, in line with everything that surrounds the last act of the adventure. It’s a show, audiovisual and playable, because of the way in which all the elements that make Candle great intersect in a brilliant way; but that final test, the challenge with which you say goodbye to the game, has known me little. There are also certain inaccuracies with the control system. It is not something serious, but annoying at specific moments of the game, when Teku does not respond fully to your orders and ends up falling into the grasp of enemies, or in the depths of an abyss. Small details that do not overshadow the heroic work done by Teku Studios; a team with few resources, yes, but that is left over with passion and love for video games. It shows in each of the elements that make this one of the best and most creative adventures of recent years. Special mention, once again, to the beautiful music that accompanies the game, with an impressive final theme; and also to the great work of dubbing the Spanish in charge of the sadly deceased Pepe Mediavilla, which you will undoubtedly know for being the voice of Gandalf in the films of The Lord of the Rings.Pepe Mediavilla

Since some might think that this is an adventure point & click; here the hero is controlled as you would in any 2D action adventure, that is, directly controlling his movements with the command. Therefore, although in Nintendo Switch it is possible to enjoy Candle in a portable mode, and it’s great! The game does not support the touch screen of the hybrid console. The management of the inventory or navigation through its menus is done directly from the command. To finish, if you’re in physical editions, you’ll like to know that the game on Switch and PS4 will have a special physical version in September that will cost 29.95 euros.

Ingenious, original, pure audiovisual show, fun, exciting … The candle is this and much more because this puzzle adventure is one of the best love letters that have been dedicated to the genre that forged great classics like Another World or Flashback. There is much charm in the trip that Teku Studios offers, but also passion and love for a work that costs not to love as if it were their own. Some somewhat convoluted challenges and certain inaccuracies in the control system detract some brightness from a PC video game that, despite everything, shines like a few … now also in consoles.

  • Art in Motion. The design of scenarios, the characters, the watercolors … it’s great!
  • Great variety of puzzles, which are also ingenious and original
  • The history, the dubbing into Spanish and the beautiful soundtrack
  • Slight inaccuracies with the control system
  • Sometimes it is subtle and difficult to detect some clues to solve their puzzles
  • It is missing a final challenge at the height of that grand finale that closes the game
