Debs, otherwise known as Ceb, was a piece of the team OG side that won the international 2018. In an ongoing match, Debs considered a Russian opponent a “third-world dog”, and said the other groups were “Russian whores” that would “sell their mom for MMR”—you can see screenshots of the in-game talk here.

In a later post on the Dota 2 subreddit, he said he wasn’t “summing up” Russian people, yet rather calling out that two “harmful” opponents who were attention trying to demolish the game were both Russian. “Both being Russians, I only named it,” he said. In any case, he conceded that he had set an “exceptionally poor example”, and he was sorry for his choice of words.

Virtus Pro’s Berezin, who is Russian, shared his considerations on the occurrence on Friday, calling on Valve to guarantee “consistency and transparency with regards to treating racism in our game”.

“I won’t take an interest at the upcoming Epicenter Major that will be played in my nation of origin except Valve openly talks about this case and guarantees consistency and transparency with regards to treating racism in our game,” he said.

“I am proud to be Russian and your words leave me astounded. You’re not some youthful player who can do reckless stuff since he probably not understand the results. You’ve been in this game since the very begin, you’ve earned a great deal of respect and it makes the situation even worse.”

If Valve did take action, it wouldn’t be totally unprecedented: it prohibited Carlo “Kuku” Palad from January’s Chongqing Major for utilizing bigot insults against Chinese groups.
