After passing through PlayStation 4, Tetris Effect arrives on PC without losing a single one of its options, since it adapts to computers with all the graphic and virtual reality options available. In the Tetris Effect analysis, we delve into how this new version brings depth to the original experience and what new modes the mix includes.
Tetris Effect is back. The classic game refuses to abandon players, as evidenced by its launch for PS4 and also the launch on Nintendo Switch of Tetris 99, a Battle Royale version of the formula. In Tetris Effect the challenge does not eliminate the aesthetic, and it is that Resonair’s work is presented as a true sensory experience. Therefore, the virtual reality mode is important, and it is good to know that this version of the PC is compatible with glasses created for computers. At any time we can start the game under SteamVR or under OculusVR, so even if the game has been released exclusively by the time of the Epic Store, Tetris Effect will be compatible with the main virtual reality devices on the market.
If the visual experience in the console was already good, in PC it squeezes all the possibilities to the maximum. It is not that Tetris Effect is very technically demanding, but it is good to display its menu of graphic options in this version and see that it has been committed to respecting all high resolutions and even compatibility with ultra-panoramic monitors, even if it is not the game anymore necessary for this, since the action takes place in the central grid. Shortly after you have a good computer, you can select all the options in ultra mode, which will also allow you to increase the detail and volume of the particles which are, without a doubt, what causes the greatest visual impact of this work. We can not forget the controls, which have been adapted for the occasion allowing us to choose our command and configure it in detail, but without forgetting the keyboard alternative that, in addition, is a very comfortable option for a Tetris. There is even a possibility to combine it with the keyboard if it is considered necessary.
These are the main novelties of PC in the Tetris Effect, but what has the videogame really contributed to the conglomerate of games about Alexey Pajitnov’s classic? To what extent does it stand out compared to the other versions that have come out in all these decades?
The Tetris effect
The reason I spent a year absorbed by Guitar Hero when I discovered it was not only because of its attractive musical repertoire. It is hard for me to explain. When you advanced to the highest levels of difficulty, and the colored buttons rained literally on your screen, a phenomenon as strange as it was addictive was generated. I am a fairly rational person. I like to think about things a lot and that everything fits in my head. When Guitar Hero’s notes passed so fast that your brain was unable to compute them, suddenly, by magic, your fingers went alone. And there you were, watching how they moved and unable to understand it. You were one with the song. He hadn’t had that feeling in a long time. Until the Tetris Effect.
The magic of this version is discovered in its Travel mode.
In the beginning, because of that synesthetic connection that the game creates between music, color, and the classic pieces falling. The relaxation of its first areas soon gives rise to a meteoric compass, in which speeds are mixed that go beyond what your reflexes are capable of processing. It is in those moments that it happens. Your fingers, again, spin the pieces at a dizzying pace, desperate because you manage to fit them. Beyond speed level 10, the game forces you to make a choice: guide yourself by your instincts or dedicate yourself to something else.
It encourages overcoming, not to abandon
In that variant of the Shoot’em Up that is the Bullet Hell, the developers tried to curl more the curl of the genre. To fill the bullet screen, your ship was too big. It took up too much screen space. Therefore, they devised a trick. The only vital part of the sprite was the core and the rest was transparent and so it seemed that your reflexes were almost instinctive. In Tetris, the same thing happened. The only way to increase speed more than the eye was able to perceive was to create a little trick. The piece falls like a rock, but you can spend a few seconds turning it at the base. Tetris Effect once again bases its most challenging phases on this mechanic that will be enough to put your nerves to the surface. It is the difference between life and death and a complete need to spend the game that is enhanced more than ever thanks to the force that the soundtrack prints in the game. In Normal difficulty mode, speed 13 already puts you insufficient tension, while Hard or Master Modes with superhuman speeds are for true experts.
It’s all in your head
The so-called “Tetris Effect” is commonly known to be the phenomenon that occurs in the avid players of this puzzle. At the end of their games, they continue to see pieces fall trying to be placed. It is more than possible that they dream of them, completely obsessed with making them square in their heads. Tetris Effect is the ultimate expression of this concept, so it is powerful to match the puzzle with the music and the effects around the game matrix. You know what I’m talking about. That characteristic of synchronizing the visual and sound that is the hallmark of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s games with Rez, Lumines or Child of Eden. Joining the name of the designer with that of Tetris is something that any Japanese fan has waited a lifetime. The result, as you may have already noticed, not only meets but marks the player. Tetris Effect is the best Tetris experience for a player you could try.
I say for a player because the piece that does not fit in the puzzle is the online section, completely non-existent. Yes, you have some leaderboards that you can compare with the rest of the world or friends, while you level up and unlock avatars, orbiting the globe in the form of holograms. Mizuguchi’s statements do not stop convincing, alluding to the fact that they wanted a clean experience of the troubled online world and its abuses, especially in regard to a puzzle game. Even more when we do not find a way to play with friends online or locally avoiding unknown players. Yes, new events will be added that will appear on weekends. The so-called Weekend Ritualthat proposes a challenge to complete among the entire community. If the goal of points is achieved, we unlock a new Avatar for our player. Even so, I think it is not enough. I understand the purity of Tetris as a positive and unipersonal experience, but I think that with a multiplayer that was always characteristic of the series this symphony would have finished being complete.
The Trip is accompanied by a series of tests in Effect mode. Do not underestimate these tests, much less, because you can end up spending more hours than anything else. While some offer you marathons, classic modes, and playlists so you can get carried away by relaxation and music, you can’t stop playing Concentration and Mystery modes. Tests in which we will be required to eliminate certain infected blocks or lines, for example. But Mystery is so much fun that it is the mandatory stop. Modes made to surprise you with the unpredictable, in which the Tetris Effect takes the opportunity to troll the player in any way you can think of: placing blocks, increasing the size of the pieces, inverting the controls or the screen …
Nor do you underestimate the Virtual Reality mode, because although Tetris Effect can be played from beginning to end without the glasses, the experience with them placed next to good headphones is completely sensory. As in REZ, we return to this digital surrealism in which particles and effects flow in front of and behind the matrix while a musical score is formed based on our actions. In fact, the result is so magical that it can deconcentrate. To be able to pass the most difficult phases of the Travel Mode I have preferred to do it without the glasses on since the ability that it has to abstract itself and let itself be carried away by the colors and the melody is unique.
There are rough edges. Although updates have been fixed having to bring the camera to the grid whenever you restart a level, you still have to adjust it whenever you leave the program. However, the absence of that multiplayer is still the real flaw of the game. It is not that there is no challenge beyond Travel, because there are modes of difficulty and the most difficult yet, to pass all phases from beginning to end without continuing. I know that some superhuman will get it, but with every screen, every challenge, I have already felt satisfaction that has not surfaced for a long time.
It’s the best Tetris experience for a player you could try.
I’ve always had a problem with piece L. That damn tetromino that has his counterpart invested and that spoiled all my plans because I always had to think a couple of seconds more what was the correct way to use each time. Throughout my games with Tetris, this piece has been a constant. But unlike the other versions that I have played during all these years, in Tetris Effect I have made peace with it. Not for anything in particular. Simply, the Tetris Effect encourages overcoming. Not to abandon. To learn to place the damn right piece in a reflex act. I am writing this act followed by finishing the last screen and I am in a complete trance. And I don’t want to wake up.

Tetris Effect is an experience made for the delight of the senses. The audiovisual synchronization with the movements of the pieces is impeccable. But beyond this, he manages to develop one of the most challenging and well-built Tetris of recent years, accompanied by several ways to expand his playable life. The PC version moves perfectly respecting its modes for virtual reality, through compatibility with SteamVR and OculusVR.
